Refusing to go out in the dark

Since the nights have been drawing in Blue has starting to refuse to go out even for a pee in the garden after dark. He will not get off his bed at all. Think it is a combination of the fireworks and his eyesight is very slightly starting to go. He has been spooked by trees moving the dark and doesn't seem to be able to figure out what the are now.

He normally has a bladder of steel but this am Phil came down to pees and poos on the carpet. His tum is a bit upset due to antibiotics for a tooth infection so we are blaming that but obviously don't want it to happen again. He had bee ok without an evening walk for the last 2 weeks or so

Short of investing in 1 of those spring loaded seats that dame thora heard used to advistise to place under his bed to caterpult him out I am not sure what to do. Blue is a big chap and it takes Phil all his strength to try and get him out the door!

Any idea

Sorry other than carring a large flash light with you so it lights Blues way, not sure how to deal with that one. Hope you can get things sorted out soon, poor baby! Nora

Amanda i am having the same problem with Sally, as soon as it gets dark she just won't budge and i've had a few accidents in the house too. I really don't know what to do for the best but i am having to force her out at the moment as she just cannot hold on till morning.


In the first week it took all my cajoling and physical strength to get her out but i seem to have to drag her a bit less now, it's like she is beginning to realise that she is going out anyway so not much point in fighting it, so my plan is just to carry on as i am doing at the moment and hope that she eventually realises she is safe and gets a bit happier about it.

Our neighbour's dog is the same, and refuses to go out in the dark. They think that she is associating night-time with fireworks. If this is the case for Blue and Sally, maybe as time goes on they might feel a bit safer?

When Belle won't go - like when it's cold or rainy (she's such a wuss) - I usually go outside first.  Her nosiness usually gets the better of her and after a few moments she follows me.  Don't know if that would work with Blue.

Yesterday was better he went with a little dragging but enjoyed his walk when out. He was so funny the day before. Phil came in from work and normally Blue goes crackers but he stayed on his bed and didn't move just in case dad thought about taking him for a walk. Think it was the fireworks that did it as a really load banger went off 1 night just as he poked his nose out the door so he must have been thinking that was going to happen again. Thanks for all the replies nice to know were not the only ones taking a dog for a drag rather than walk

Nah, you're not alone.  We quite often go for drags when it's cold, wet, windy or whatever bee Millie currently has in her bonnet!
