NEW CLASSES FOR JANUARY 18TH

Viv is this a weekly class and if so do you have any scheduled dates for the one day crash course that you have run before?. I'm too far away to manage weekly. Thanks.

Hi Gail,

I am likely to schedule a couple of one day workshops, probably in March. No actual dates yet though. Will post when I know.

If anyone else might be interested, let me know, if we get enough numbers, I may bring it forward.

We would be interested in bringing Tilly if it doesn't clash with anything. Would have to be the one day course as live through in Fife and getting through weekly would be a prob. What sort of things do you do on these courses?

The day courses basically condense the weekly course which corresponds with the booklet which you can get from the GAL shop.

A recommendation from a recent pupil!!

Keira has just finished her introduction course with Viv. Both Keira & I really enjoyed it & will be returning in the new year to do the bronze award.

I recommend not missing out if you live in the near by area. Also Vivs book is excellant as it goes hand in hand with the classes.

I can recommend the one day classes. We took Sunny to the last one and it was amazing how much she learnt (and us if I am honest). We have continued the training at home and Sunny loves it, she now does a very impressive bow to command, this is the dog we thought couldn't be taught anything.

We would love to do another one day follow up course.

The positive feed back is very encouraging.

Great to see lots of familiar faces today at the GAL Xmas show.

Sorry, the original message does say classes start back on the 19th Jan. It is in fact the 18th of Jan - THURSDAY.

This is an old thread for training classes (2006 / 2007), so unsure if Viv is still holding training sessions especially for greyhounds. However, here is a link to Viv Silverstein's website, so you could perhaps give her phone or send an e-mail to see if she is planning to hold some classes in the near future.

We used Broxburn Dog Training, they do a weekly class that is very good.

I contacted Vivien who has sent the following reply:
"I would be happy to do a one day course on a Sunday here at the centre in Cambuslang specifically for the 'greyhound gang' over your side. Last time we did it it was really successful.
If we could get 8 dogs together, I will arrange a date to suit."

We would certainly be interested in taking Tara - happy to liaise if that helps ?

It's Cambuslang. It's beyond the east end of Glasgow. Prob from the city centre it's only a 10 min drive away and fairly direct if you take the motorway. Google or AA for directions from Dunoon. Hope you can go, I took my two last year and it was a great day and well worth it.

Mason and I went last year and he was an absolute brat all day

If he could have stuck two fingers up at me he would. It was like having Kevin the Teenager in greyhound form

I'm still smarting from being told he wouldn't do what he was asked because he was 'fat'

methinks it had more to do with the fact that being taller than the rest he clocked a table full of chopped up hotdogs the second we walked in.
It was very informative though and the clicker training does seem to work - at least everyone else's groo got the hang of it very quickly.
I ended up taking Mason to a Kennel Club class in Aberlady where he graduated alongside Rag. Katherine Brown, who runs it, has experience of lurchers and understands its not all about teaching them to sit. It was a real back to basics for Mason and me but showed me what he could do and helped build my confidence when it comes to handling him.

That's a disappointing email and I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your training day.

I would like to reasure everyone that we do not request 'sit' from Greys during any part of our training nor do I ever recall telling anyone that their dog is too fat to do so.

My classes are Kennel Club registered.

May I just remind all that the training day is an effort to do something for those that cannot attend weekly training. It is also about having some fun whilst learning. Not all dogs progress at the same speed, it's okay for some to take more than a moment to get the hang of things.

Sorry I didn't mean to suggest Viv tried to make dogs sit, I was referring to other general dog training classes we've all gone to and found that as a major barrier from the start.
Viv's classes are beneficial for many groo owners, they just didn't work for Mason who, I am adamant I was told could lose some weight and would work better for me if I didn't feed him for a couple of days. He's a big muscular lad who just didn't want to play ball and like an over protective mum I bristled at any criticism
