Dog treats for "Gumsies"?

Hello all!


Thought I'd pick your collective brains with this one.   Hope you don't mind.


Myrtle went to the vet last week to get a "dead" tooth out and the rest (all 16 of them!!) scaled, polished etc. (she had extensive dental work done when we got her a year and a half ago, but we knew that, sooner or later, more would be required.....especially as she will NOT have her teeth brushed!).   Unfortunately, she ended up with a bit more work than we'd expected, and now has the grand sum of 6 teeth left!   We don't feel too guilty about it - as I said, her teeth were pretty bad when we got her and I suspect the vet would have removed more at that time but, as she seemed a bit ropey health wise, I honestly don't think anyone expected her to last this long (it's amazing what a bit of spoiling will do).


Anyway, my question is this:  what treats would you recommend for an old dog with 6 teeth (none of which seem to match up top and bottom, and none of which are at the back!!!!) and a hearty appetite. 


I've been in the habit of giving her the type of chew which is supposed to help to clean teeth and gums (being an oldie when we got her, and with the terrible mouthful of teeth she had, it was obvious she hadn't been used to having her teeth cleaned for her, and she just would not tolerate the idea), but I'm not really sure if she'll be able to cope with that sort of thing now, or if it'll hurt her gums?


I'm not sure how we'll cope with the 6 remaining teeth - however, if they last another year and a half Myrtle will be nearly 14, so perhaps it won't be an issue!!!


Anyway, all advice will be gratefully received!

My two love Shmacos ( think thats how you spell it) they are soft and do not take any chewing they also smell lovely. Or try small pieces of hotdog which they tend to hoover up rather than chew.  Hope this helps. Nora

Our collie Gem has had 2 of his back teeth removed and he really struggles with some chews, but the softer ones are fine for him.

Many thanks for your replies folks, all gratefully received.


Well, it looks as though Myrtle is going to be very spoiled from now on....chicken, hotdog, cheese, Schmakos, etc., etc.!!!   That and the odd bit of liver cake - when my stomach can stand making it!!

Have you tried the spreadable cheese "Primula"? I let Ozzy lick it straight out of the tube to avoid any mess (works wonders as an incentive to getting him to walk to heal!). Just make sure the rest of the family don't use it on their sarnies!

Once again, I hadn't thought of that - Cookie gets Kongs (the only toy he HASN'T destroyed), usually stuffed with cat treats below and a big "Shape" sized treat at the top, but that squidgey cheese stuff would be even better to "mould" it all together!   Will definitely try it, thanks!!!!

Dont know how suitable it is, but Sally likes her kong stuffed with squidgy ripe banana occasionally. We dont give her too much as we are not sure if its that good for her.

Bananas are good in moderation. It is a very natural feed, used in the BARF diet.

to be honest at her age Myrtle should have whatever she wants, to hang with her bad teeth just see what she likes! She might surprise you, my old Suzie had 2 teeth left and she used to love pigs ears, she'd suck em to death for a couple of hours then when she got tired one of the other dogs would invairably nick the soggy remains from her bed, you knew she was defo finished if she didn't growl at them!..

A few monhs ago Dan got lots of teeth removed. He does look like an OAP greyhound now, but what he does instead of chewing the rawhide chews is unravel them so that they are all flat, but about a foot long then sooks them to death, hehee. Keeps him happy for hours! Sally finishes hers in about 10 minutes. Think Dan does it deliberately to get her back for her always stealing his bed!!

Once again, very many thanks for all the replies!   Loads of ideas there - all will find equal favour with Myrtle cos she eats just about anything!!!!   She especially likes things she's stolen (nearly had a heart attack several weeks ago cos she pinched a cooked chicken - daft old thing was making her way THROUGH to the breast - she obviously hadn't realised that she only had to turn it over.......!   Anyway, we had a very worrying time for about a week until we knew that the bones hadn't done any damage!).  


The last time she got a pigs ear was when she still had her 16 teeth.   She disappeared for a couple of hours and when I finally tracked her down she was lying on our bed, exhausted, surrounded by drool and all these tiny little chewed and soggy bits of the ear.   Kind of put us off the idea of going to bed that night.....!


Anyway, on that note, I will go and let them out for their last trot before bedtime!
