Well, it's official! Millie is trying her best to bankrupt me!
We were out for our morning walk and, true to form, Millie was messing about and has managed (yet again) to wrench her dew claw. She was promptly huckled home and bandaged until I got her in to the vet.
The vet was great - he sedated her there and then and nipped it out (for about the third time). He kindly informed me that the last time Millie had had this done was January so at least she's consistent! She didn't seem to want to wake up though. She was listening to us because we could see her blinking and her ears twitching but she just would not respond to our encouragement. Eventually, when the nurse opened the door and told her to come on she was up like grease lightning. Little madam!
Anyway, she's been lying in her bed since she came home feeling very sorry for herself - she looks so pitiful. I made her a nice dinner but she wasn't interested. Will just have to make a big fuss of her instead. With luck, it will all be a dim memory in no time!
You may not like the idea some people don't but why not have the dew claws removed? £ of mine have and it just makes life so much easier and it does save on vet bills
I think I am going to get Jack's dew claws removed permanently soon. He has had lots of problems in the 6months I have had him. We have a slight embankment in our garden. When he is running up the wee hill he always catches them and snags them. There is usually lots of yelping afterwards. He also loves to make a bed!! He fluffs and pumps up the bedding and pillows, he always ends up whinning and yelping becasue they get caught. He recently got an infection in the pad next to the dew claw and was on metacam painkillers and synulox penicillin.
I think it would be best to just get rid of them completely. I just keep putting off the inevitable, but I know I must do it soon. Luckily, I am insured and would only pay £50 quid excess.
Thanks for all the good wishes. Millie was pretty much back to normal the next day. She's galloping about like a good'un again.
Strangely, it has only ever been the one claw she has snagged and had pulled out. The other one has been (blissfully) straightforward! I'm not surprised that she did it again as this time, when it reappeared, it was slightly crooked and stuck out slightly.
I did contemplate getting them completely removed but hadn't quite got round to it what with them being under the weather etc. The vet seemed to think that there was a high chance that it would not grow back this time - something to do with the bone inside. Here's hoping anyway. They also cut the other one back as short as they could so that there was less chance of her catching that one.
