STRANGE BEHAVIOUR
Permalink Closed

I'm getting a bit concerned about Wills.  He's been very clingy this last week or so and has been very shivery.

What is worrying me even more is that he keeps going out and just standing in the garden and will not come into the house for anything.  He's also taken to lying in some very strange places - totally not normal (for him).

The only thing that I can think of is that he's been totally spooked by the power cut on Hogmanay - he was quite distressed when the lights all went out, he was panting and his eyes were bulging out his head, kinda like during a thunder storm!

Any suggestions out there?

Poor Wills It does sound like he is  stressed about something and if i'm honest Sally has been doing much the same, although not the shivering bit. I was putting it down to the fact that she has been freaked out again with the fireworks over new year!!

I am just ignoring her behaviour and trying to keep things as upbeat and normal as possible in the hope that she will just come round in her own time like she did after bonfire night. Not sure if that really is the best way to handle it but figured if it worked before it should do again although obviously i am keeping an eye on her just in case it's something completely different

Good luck with him, i really hope he is back to his normal self soon.

Could be the upcoming full moon, apparently it's meant to be the strongest moon of the year, so our pooches may well go a bit daft...

On a more serious note though is there anything health wise bothering him? If he doesn't settle down in a couple of days it may be worth getting him checked.

We're thinking about giving the vet a call tomorrow as he is still behaving like this.  I was beginning to think I was being paranoid and exaggerating however he did it with Graeme this evening too.

It's hard to tell with his health as he already has diabetes and, as we know, it slowly affects their eyesight.  I'm wondering if it has something to do with that as Wills is a chronic worrier.  If you look at him for any length of time, he frets and looks like he's expecting a limb to drop off.  I was hoping it was to do with fireworks and the fact that we were all pitched into complete darkness on Hogmanay and that he'd settle down again.  However, no sign as yet.  At times he seems scared to come into the house.

I always hate having to have him go to the vet as I'm always worried about the answer.  The good news is, it hasn't put him off his grub.

Sorry I cannot help with answers for you, just hope it is just a case of being freaked out with the power cut and he settles down again. Like you have said always worth getting things checked if things do not improve for him. Good Luck. Nora

Well, Graeme popped into the vets today, firstly to get more insulin for Wills and secondly to ask what they thought about this strange behaviour.

Our vet thought it may have been connected to his diabetes but his urine tests are still very consistent, sitting at around the 1% mark, and the vet was happy with this and ruled that out.  He then thought there may be a blood imbalance of some sort so suggested we monitor him carefully over the coming days and, if necessary, take him in for tests.

The good news is, Wills must have overheard us talking about vets, we have had a stress-free and normal evening with him.  He's even managed to trot straight back into the house with no hesitation!  The things they'll do to avoid a trip to the vet!!!    (I feel like a bit of a panic merchant though).

On the less reassuring side, we did not get any insulin.    There seems to be a major shortage all over at present but the new batch is due next week so they are hoping to get it in on Monday.  They had a one bottle left however someone came here on holiday, presented themselves at the vets and told them they'd forgotten theirs so got the last bottle.  My vet phoned their vet just after that, only to discover that they had been told that their own vet couldn't get any either!    I've got to try and cut down Wills' dose between now and Monday to try and eke it out.    If they can't get me any on Monday, they have said they will try and arrange something through one of the chemist's until they get his normal stuff.    Trials & tribulations all round!

Karen what a shame, just as one problem seems to be sorting itself out along comes another Have to say that was a pretty sneaky move on the part of the other people who got the last bottle but i suppose they must really care about their own dog very much to pull a stunt like that....not that it helps you and Wills though

Hope you get his insulin on Monday and manage ok over the weekend.

p.s i managed to get Sally out for a walk slightly easier tonight so maybe she is beginning to forget that the fireworks scared her and hopefully it's just been the same with Wills.
